Introduction

Most Canadians assume the chicken on their plate is just… chicken. But the reality of commercial poultry production tells a very different story — one involving routine antibiotic use, synthetic growth promoters, and a supply chain optimized for speed and volume, not your health.

At HOTRO.ca, we've made a non-negotiable commitment: no antibiotics, no added hormones, ever. Not in our poultry. Not in any product we sell. Full stop.

Here's why that matters — and why we think you deserve to know exactly what you're eating.

The Antibiotic Problem in Commercial Poultry

Antibiotics in poultry farming aren't just used to treat sick birds. For decades, they've been used preventatively — administered to entire flocks to promote faster growth and compensate for the crowded, stressful conditions of industrial farming.

The consequences are serious:

  • Antibiotic resistance — routine low-dose antibiotic use in livestock is one of the leading drivers of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a growing global health crisis. When antibiotics stop working for humans, it's partly because we've been overusing them in the food system.
  • Residue concerns — while Canadian regulations set limits on antibiotic residues in meat, "within limits" is not the same as "none." Many consumers reasonably prefer zero.
  • A system built for volume, not health — when antibiotics are used as a growth tool, the goal is faster birds at lower cost. Your health is not the primary variable.

What About Hormones?

Here's something most people don't know: added hormones in poultry are already banned in Canada. So why are we talking about it?

Because the marketing around "hormone-free" chicken is often misleading. Technically, all Canadian chicken is hormone-free by law — but that label is frequently used to imply a broader standard of care that may not exist. A bird can be "hormone-free" and still be raised in overcrowded conditions, fed a poor diet, and treated with multiple rounds of antibiotics.

At HOTRO.ca, we believe in full transparency, not checkbox marketing.

The HOTRO.ca Standard

Every poultry product we carry is sourced from BC farms that meet our strict criteria:

  • No antibiotics — ever. Not preventative, not therapeutic as a growth tool. If a bird requires medical treatment, it is removed from our supply chain.
  • No added hormones — and we go further than the legal baseline by requiring our farm partners to document and verify this.
  • Pasture-raised or free-range — birds raised with space, natural light, and access to the outdoors. Stress-free animals produce better meat. It's that simple.
  • Local BC sourcing — short supply chains mean more accountability. We know our farmers. We visit farms. We ask hard questions.

This isn't a marketing position. It's a sourcing requirement. If a supplier can't meet our standard, they're not a HOTRO.ca supplier.

Why This Matters for Your Family

You're not just buying chicken. You're making a decision about what goes into your body and the bodies of the people you feed. The difference between conventionally raised poultry and what we source isn't subtle — it's fundamental.

Cleaner inputs. Better animal welfare. A supply chain you can actually trust.

That's the HOTRO.ca promise — and it applies to every single product we sell, not just poultry.

The Bottom Line

The commercial poultry industry has normalized practices that most consumers would reject if they knew about them. We think that's wrong. And we've built HOTRO.ca around the belief that you shouldn't have to be a food scientist to eat well.

No antibiotics. No hormones. No compromises.
