Sri Lankan Red Basmati Rice — Nutty, Earthy & Whole-Grain Nourishment

This is the real thing. Sri Lankan Red Basmati Rice is an un-hulled, long-grain variety traditionally cultivated in the tropical wet zones of Sri Lanka — where rich soil, high humidity, and generations of farming knowledge produce a rice unlike anything you'll find on a supermarket shelf. Nutty, earthy, and deeply satisfying, with delicate kernels that hold their shape perfectly when cooked.

Why This Rice?

  • Un-hulled & whole grain — the bran layer is intact, meaning more fibre, more minerals, and more nutrition in every bowl
  • Nutty, earthy flavour — a complex, satisfying taste that pairs beautifully with curries, stews, and grilled meats
  • Delicate long-grain kernels — cook up fluffy and separate, never mushy or broken
  • Traditionally grown in Sri Lanka — cultivated in the tropical wet zone, one of the world's most fertile rice-growing regions
  • Versatile — a staple in Sri Lankan cuisine, equally at home in everyday meals and special occasion dishes

How to Cook Sri Lankan Red Basmati Rice

  • Rinse the rice 2–3 times in cold water until the water runs mostly clear
  • Soak for 20–30 minutes (optional but recommended — improves texture and reduces cook time)
  • Ratio: 1 cup rice to 2–2.5 cups water
  • Bring to a boil, then reduce to a low simmer, cover, and cook for 35–40 minutes
  • Rest off the heat for 5–10 minutes before fluffing with a fork
  • Tip: A pinch of salt and a small knob of butter or coconut oil added to the water elevates the flavour beautifully

What Is Red Basmati Rice Good For?

Red rice is a whole grain powerhouse. The intact bran layer provides dietary fibre for digestive health, along with iron, magnesium, and antioxidants — including anthocyanins, the same compounds found in blueberries and red cabbage. It has a lower glycaemic index than white rice, making it a smarter choice for sustained energy and blood sugar balance.

Serving Suggestions

  • Alongside a rich Sri Lankan coconut curry or dhal
  • As a base for grain bowls with roasted vegetables and tahini
  • Paired with our Nourish Yourself Bone Broth — cook the rice in broth instead of water for an extra layer of flavour and nutrition
  • Served with grilled chicken or fish and a squeeze of lemon
